Just another weekend

This past week was hectically busy, and I realized when I was entering my time in on my timecard that with the holiday, I'd worked all my required hours prior to the start of Friday. To say the least, I wasn't overly motivated to kill myself on Friday.

On Saturday, I decided I needed a break. It was so hot and humid here, that I decided to head to the coast where I figured it would be a bit cooler. I had heard of this great place in Newport that I wanted to check out, so I headed out there. When I got there, however, the place was closed for a private event. I decided to check out some parts of the island I haven't seen yet, so I took a drive along the coast and found Ft. Adams.

Ft. Adams is one of the historical landmarks in the area. I took the "grand tour" of the place. It was actually really an amazing facility that they kept open for over 100 years--clear up until the 1950's. It was the 3rd largest fort in the US, and it was amazingly well thought out. It was set to protect from sea, land, and under ground tunneling (when it was built, they didn't really have air invasions to worry about). They even had "listening" tunnels where they could detect enemy movement that we were able to tour. For something built in the early 1800's, it was actually quite a technological wonder.

They also had a Civil War re-enactmen going on this weekend, so the fort was busy with all kinds of activities from the encampments. Although the fort never actually saw any battles during the Civil War, it was kind of cool to have the actors there. I did have to laugh at how the battle took place. They kind of marched up to each other and took turns shooting at each other without much else going on. I'm not sure that's exactly how it would happen during an actual battle--I'm thinking some simultaneous shooting must have happened at some point, but it was entertaining to watch them die...then get hot and fan themselves or reach out and put on their shades because the sun was shining too brightly in their "dead" eyes. Awww...well..maybe not exactly like history, but definitely much more fun!

I am also VERY excited about the weight loss challenge. I admit that I wasn't very excited about it at first, but everyone elses' enthusiasm as fired me up! I actually ate the salad bar at lunch today. I always tell myself that I'm going to eat salad, but then never do. Now that I know I'm going to have to report out, I actually purchased a salad...and ate it. A pretty happy day over all! :)
